Dr. Wendy Loonin
Dr. Loonin is a New Jersey, New York, and Interjurisdictionally Telepsychology (APIT) licensed psychologist who received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1996 from SUNY Buffalo. She has specialized in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) throughout her career, training in the VA system of health care. After completing her degree, Dr. Loonin co-created and co-directed an outpatient trauma program at Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY where she conducted clinical research and provided comprehensive treatment, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), to trauma survivors with an array of psychiatric disorders.
Upon returning to her home state of New Jersey, Dr. Loonin, along with Dr. Gingold and their clinical team, were intensively trained in DBT through Behavioral Tech. In addition, Dr. Loonin completed an intensive advanced training with Marsha Linehan, creator of DBT. She also has extensive training in various other treatment modalities including CBT, CPT, Motivational Interviewing, Prolonged Exposure, ACT, IFS and EMDR.
Dr. Loonin is proud to be providing compassionate care to teens, young adults and their families in Summit, NJ for 20 years. She has over 25 years of experience treating patients with all mood disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, self-injury, trauma histories, family conflict, and suicidality. She has also supervised many post-doctoral students throughout her career. As a DBT clinician, Dr. Loonin believes in the power that comes from learning how to self-regulate intense emotions while also learning how to effectively seek out help from others. She is passionate in her work helping teens, young adults, their parents and individuals throughout their lifespan to build a positive sense of self, improve their ability to connect with others in healthy ways and ultimately find their own path to building a life worth living. Dr. Loonin uses her unique brand of humor, irreverence, warmth and "realness" to establish safe connections with her patients that provide the necessary conditions to cultivate their motivation to feel and do the hard things that will help them grow.
